How to make your iPhone ready for sale?

Apple is famous for its flagship phone getting released at regular intervals. Usually towards the end of the year is when they do this. In this day and age, Apple phones (a.k.a iPhones) are considered to be a status symbol because of their high cost and equally impressive features. Whether it is the camera quality, the ease of use or stringent security features, iPhones are always a class apart from the competition. Because of the popularity, owning the latest model as soon as they are available becomes the need of the hour. So what do you do with the old model in your hand?

One option would be to give it to a family member who could continue to use it. In case if you are short on cash to invest in the latest model, you can consider selling it online or at a used phone sales shop. Either way, there are certain things you need to ensure before parting ways with your beloved smartphone.

  1. Back up data - via iCloud or iTunes: There are 2 options for backing up your data on an iPhone. The first option is to back up your data on iCloud. Here the data is stored securely in the online storage space where all Apple users commonly store their data on a highly secure server owned by Apple. The backups are highly encrypted and can be downloaded on your new device using WiFi. By default, there is a free storage capacity of 5 GB offered which can be extended with different plans. In order to backup your data, connect to a WiFi network and open settings. Tap iCloud on your name, enable iCloud backup and click Tap backup now. You can watch the progress of your backup.

The other option is to back up your data on your MacBook or PC using iTunes. Here the storage capacity available will depend on the space available on the MacBook or PC to which you are transferring. You can encrypt your data once transferred and use the backup whenever required.

Once connected to the MacBook, open iTunes. Follow the instructions and enter the password. Locate your device on the MacBook and click Backup Now. The password will be really crucial once the transfer is complete since you cannot access the data without it.

  1. Unpair Apple Watch: The Apple watch will restore it to its factory settings once unpaired. Make sure to remove the transit card in the Wallet app from your Apple watch before unpairing. In order to unpair, Open the Watch App on the iPhone, tap all Watches under My Watch Tab. Tap the info button next to your watch and click unpair Apple Watch. Make sure to take a backup if any health data available in the Watch is important.

  2. Remove cards from Apple Pay: go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, tap the card that you want to remove, then scroll down and click Remove This Card. Repeat the step if you have multiple cards.

  3. Sign out of iCloud and the iTunes & App Store: If you're using iOS 10.3 or later, tap Settings > [your name]. Scroll down and tap Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off.

If you're using iOS 10.2 or earlier, tap Settings > iCloud > Sign Out. Tap Sign Out again, then tap Delete from My [device] and enter your Apple ID password. Then go to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID > Sign Out.

  1. Turn off Find My iPhone: This feature permits a user to track their lost iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. For example, If you lose your iPhone, you can use the Find My app on another device to see its last known location. In order to turn it off, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud >Find My iPhone. Turn off the Find my iPhone feature.

  2. Deregister iMessage: To avoid the possibility that your iPhone continues getting “imessages” addressed to you, it is recommended to turn off this feature before handover. Under settings, go to Messages and disable the “iMessage” feature.

  3. Erase All Content and Settings: Now that all the data has been backed up, it’s time to delete the data and settings from the phone. It may take a few hours depending on the amount of data and the iPhone version. So it is advisable to charge your phone to 100% before beginning the process. Once ready, go to settings and under General, find the option “reset”. Tap on Erase All Content and Settings and enter the passcode. Then tap on “Erase iPhone”. Please note that this is an irreversible step.

  4. Remove screen lock pattern: Remove any security patterns or number lock used as screen lock (if any).

  5. Remove iPhone From Your Apple ID Account: unregister your iPhone from Apple’s website so that it is no longer linked to your Apple ID by logging into Apple’s website.

  6. Remove your old device from your list of trusted devices: On Apple’s website, go to the Apple ID account page and sign in. Then go to the devices section and remove your current iPhone.

  7. Remove SIM-If you are using a physical SIM, ensure to remove it before handover. If you've been using an eSIM, make sure you remove or deactivate it.

  8. Unlock your phone: iPhones can fetch more money if they've been unlocked from their original mobile carrier. You can get in touch with your carrier to ensure this.

  9. Clean phone: Of course this goes without saying that the phone has to look presentable for sale. Dust off the crevices and ensure to use a wet wipe when cleaning the back of the phone.

  10. Assemble Accessories: Most people keep the box in which their iPhone was delivered. Ensure to include the Lightning cable, (unused) EarPods, and power adapter. In case you purchased any additional accessories which are only compatible with the present model, you can include them and bargain for a higher price then.
